Document FAQs

What if my passport expires soon?
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for ETIAS.
Can I use an expired passport to apply?
No. You must use a valid passport. ETIAS is linked to your passport, so you will need a new ETIAS if you get a new passport.
What if my name changed since my passport was issued?
The name on your ETIAS must match your passport exactly. If your passport has your old name, apply for ETIAS using that name. If you have updated your passport, use the new details.
I have dual citizenship. Which passport should I use?
If you have EU citizenship, travel with your EU passport — you do not need ETIAS. Otherwise, apply using the passport you will present at the border. Each ETIAS is linked to a specific passport.
Do I need a biometric passport?
Biometric passports are preferred but not required. Any machine-readable passport from an ETIAS-eligible country will work.
