Document Requirements Overview
A Schengen visa application requires many documents — far more than the simple online ETIAS application. Having the right documents is important. Incomplete applications are often rejected or delayed.
Requirements can vary slightly between embassies, so always check the specific embassy's checklist. This guide covers the standard documents required by all Schengen countries.

Passport Requirements in Detail
Your passport is the most important document. It must meet these criteria:
- Validity: At least 3 months beyond your planned Schengen exit date
- Age: Issued within the last 10 years
- Condition: Undamaged, with no missing pages
- Blank pages: At least 2 empty pages for the visa sticker
If your passport does not meet these requirements, renew it before applying.
Photo Requirements
Visa photos must meet strict Schengen photo requirements:
- Size: 35mm x 45mm
- Background: Plain white or light gray
- Age: Taken within the last 6 months
- Expression: Neutral, mouth closed
- Face coverage: 70-80% of the frame
- No accessories: No glasses, hats, or head coverings (except for religious reasons)
Financial Documents Explained
Financial proof shows you can support yourself in Europe. Requirements vary, but generally you should demonstrate:
- Enough funds: Approximately €50-100 per day of stay (varies by country)
- Regular income: Steady salary or business income over several months
- Stability: No recent large unexplained deposits (looks suspicious)
