How ETIAS Processing Works

When you submit your ETIAS application, it is automatically checked against multiple EU security databases including the Schengen Information System (SIS), Interpol databases, and Europol data.

For most applicants, this automated check completes within minutes and results in immediate approval. Your ETIAS confirmation will be sent to your email address shortly after.

What Can Cause Delays?

  • Database matches — Your information matches a security database entry

  • Incomplete information — Errors or missing data in your application

  • Additional verification — Security questions require manual review

  • Previous immigration issues — Past visa refusals or overstays flagged

  • Travel to certain regions — History of travel to high-risk areas

If Your Application Takes Longer

If your application is not approved immediately, do not panic. Here is what might happen:

  • Request for additional information — You will receive an email asking for clarification or documents. Respond promptly to avoid further delays.
  • Interview — In rare cases, you may be asked to attend an interview at an embassy or consulate of the country you are visiting first.
  • Manual review — A human officer will review your case. This can take up to 30 days.

You can check your application status on the official ETIAS portal at any time using your application number.

Processing Time FAQs

How can I check my ETIAS status?
You can check your application status on the official ETIAS portal using your application number and passport details. You will also receive email updates when your status changes.
What if I need to travel urgently?
There is no expedited ETIAS processing. If your application is delayed and you have urgent travel, contact the embassy or consulate of your first Schengen destination for guidance.
Can I apply at the airport?
Technically yes, but this is extremely risky. If your application takes longer than a few minutes, you could miss your flight. Airlines may also refuse boarding without a valid ETIAS.
Why was my application flagged for review?
Applications are flagged when automated checks find potential matches in security databases. This does not mean you will be denied — it just requires human verification.
If I'm denied, can I reapply?
You can appeal a denial or apply for a Schengen Visa instead. There is no waiting period to reapply, but you should address any issues that caused the denial first.
