Greece's Digital Nomad Visa, introduced via Law 4825/2021, allows non-EU/EEA citizens earning at least €3,500/month from remote work to reside in Greece for an initial 12 months, renewable up to two years more. Holders who become Greek tax residents qualify for a 50% income-tax exemption for seven years on Greek-sourced income — one of Europe's most generous regimes.
The visa can be obtained from a Greek consulate abroad or applied for in Greece while on a tourist entry. Conversion to a permesso di soggiorno is handled at the local immigration office, which also enables Schengen-wide free travel.

Two sides of the Greece DNV
An honest look at what works for nomads on this visa, and where the friction is.
- Article 5C 50% income tax exemption for 7 years on qualifying Greek-source employment and business income
- Article 5A flat €100,000/year regime available for high-net-worth nomads on foreign passive income
- One of Europe's lowest citizenship thresholds at 7 years of legal residence
- Family reunification with spouse, civil partner, dependent children, and dependent parents
- Island Mesh 5G network completed in 2026, addressing the historical island-connectivity gap
- Cost of living significantly below most Western and Southern European DNV countries
- Dual citizenship permitted without restriction
- Greek bureaucracy is slow: AFM, AMKA, residence permit, lease registration, bank account, EOPYY sequence routinely takes 3–4 months post-arrival
- Article 5C requires committing to 2 years of Greek tax residency with clawback if you leave early
- The 50% exemption applies to Greek-source income, not foreign-source, which limits the benefit for pure foreign-client freelancers
- Greek language (B1) is materially harder to acquire than the A2 used in Spain or Portugal, and a separate civic-knowledge exam adds work at the citizenship stage
- Healthcare quality and infrastructure varies sharply outside Athens and Thessaloniki
- Consular processing varies substantially by post: London and New York are notably slower than smaller consulates
