Hungary's White Card, launched in autumn 2022 under Government Decree 35/2022, is a one-year residence permit for non-EU citizens performing remote work for non-Hungarian employers or clients. The income threshold was raised from €2,000 to €3,000 per month in 2024, and the permit explicitly excludes family members from joining under the same application.

The card is granted initially for 12 months and renewable once for another 12, after which holders must convert to another residence category if they want to stay. Hungary's 15% flat income-tax rate is one of the lowest in the EU, making the White Card attractive for high earners willing to accept the family-eligibility and no-permanent-residency restrictions.

How Hungary taxes Digital Nomad Visa holders

The single most important factor after income thresholds. Here is what changes for you specifically as a DNV resident.

Standard tax rates apply

this country does not offer a special tax regime tied to the Digital Nomad Visa. If you cross the 183-day threshold and become a tax resident, regular progressive rates apply to worldwide income. Foreign tax credits and bilateral treaties shape what you actually pay.

Application walkthrough: the Hungary DNV

Plan four to six weeks of document prep on top of the official processing window.

  1. 1

    Confirm you qualify

Check you have remote-work income of €3.000+/month from outside Hungary, a passport valid 6+ months past your stay, and a clean criminal record.

  2. 2

    Apostille your documents

Get Hague apostille on your birth certificate, criminal record (FBI/police check), and marriage certificate if applicable. Allow two to four weeks per document.

  3. 3

    Buy compliant insurance

Private health insurance covering €30.000+ for the full visa duration, valid in Hungary, with no co-pay clauses on essential care.

  4. 4

    Submit your application

Apply through the consulate process — pay the €110 fee. Bring originals and apostilled copies; consulate appointments fill fast.

  5. 5

    Wait for approval

Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. Track via the official portal — any missing documents reset the clock.

  6. 6

    Register on arrival

Within 30 days of arrival in Hungary, complete the local residence registration (TIE / NIE / residence permit, varies by country). This unlocks your tax ID and bank access.

What income do I need for the Hungary DNV?
The minimum is €3.000/month from remote work. A partner adds €0/month; each additional dependent adds €0/month.
How long does the Hungary DNV take to process?
Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks from submission. Plan another 4-6 weeks for apostille work and consulate appointments.
Does the Hungary DNV lead to citizenship?
