Life in Eger as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Hungarian DNV route from Eger — a practical 2026 guide.

The case for Eger

Eger is one of Hungary's most beautiful small towns — a baroque jewel set in a fertile wine-growing valley in the northeast hills, with a 13th-century hilltop castle, the country's northernmost Ottoman minaret, and the legendary red blend Egri Bikavér ('Bull's Blood') flowing through the cellars beneath. The narrow, cobbled centre revolves around Dobó István Square, anchored by the twin-towered Minorite Church (one of the finest baroque facades in Central Europe) and the heroic statue of Capt. István Dobó, who in 1552 famously held the castle against a Turkish army 35 times the size of his garrison. Climb up to Eger Castle for the panorama and the moving Heroes' Hall museum; then walk to the slim 40-metre Eger Minaret — a perfectly preserved 17th-century Ottoman remnant whose 97-step spiral climb to the muezzin's balcony is one of the most claustrophobic but rewarding ascents in the country. Most travellers stay just outside town in the Szépszépasszony-völgy ('Valley of the Beautiful Woman'), a horseshoe of around 200 small wine cellars carved into a soft rhyolite hillside, where local vintners pour samples of Egri Bikavér, Leányka, and the white Egri Csillag for a few hundred forints a glass. Hungarian wine country at its most accessible.

Living in Eger as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Eger a good base for digital nomads?
Eger combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Hungary DNV route that gives you up to 24 months of legal residence. The Hungarian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Eger?
Most Hungary cities including Eger have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Hungary DNV to live in Eger?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Hungary DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Eger?
April to October Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Hungarian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Eger on the DNV?
It depends on the Hungary DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
