A taste of Netherlands

The Netherlands is small, flat, and obsessively well-organized — which is exactly why a bicycle solves everything. Amsterdam's canal belt is the famous part; Utrecht's wharf cellars under the Oudegracht might be the prettier one. Rotterdam rebuilt itself into a contemporary architecture lab after WWII flattened the old town.

Outside the Randstad, the country slows. The Frisian islands have cinematic dunes; Maastricht eats and drinks more like Belgium than Holland; the Veluwe is the closest you'll come to wilderness. Vermeer's Delft, Van Gogh in the Hoge Veluwe, and tulip fields between Leiden and Haarlem in April.
