First impressions of Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans is the most picture-perfect distillation of the classic Dutch landscape — a working open-air museum on the Zaan river just 17km north of Amsterdam, where about 50 wooden green-painted 17th- and 18th-century houses, working windmills, barns, and warehouses were relocated from across the Zaanstreek region in the 1960s to create one breathtaking ensemble. Eight of the wooden windmills are actually working: De Kat (the only working colour mill in the world, still grinding pigments for paint manufacturers), De Zoeker (oil pressing), Het Jonge Schaap (the world's only working sawmill of the Dutch industrial type), and others. You can climb up into several of them and see the wooden gears creak into action. The village is genuinely lived-in (about 100 people still call it home) and free to wander — you only pay if you want to enter the windmill interiors or the museums. The Zaans Museum and the Verkade chocolate factory experience give the broader regional story; the cheese-making and clog-making demonstrations at the entrance are unashamed tourist set-pieces but actually quite charming. Visit early morning to beat the day trippers from Amsterdam.
