Malta's Nomad Residence Permit, launched in June 2021 by Residency Malta and updated in 2024, allows third-country nationals earning €42,000+ per year to live and work remotely from Malta for up to four years. Since 2024, a flat 10% income tax applies on chargeable remote-work income — among the most attractive rates in the EU.

The permit is issued for one year initially and renewable up to three further years, after which holders must transition to a different residence category. Importantly, the Nomad Residence Permit does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship by itself.

Plan four to six weeks of document prep on top of the official processing window.

Get Hague apostille on your birth certificate, criminal record (FBI/police check), and marriage certificate if applicable. Allow two to four weeks per document.

  5. 5

    Wait for approval

Processing typically takes 4–10 weeks. Track via the official portal — any missing documents reset the clock.

  6. 6

    Register on arrival

Within 30 days of arrival in Malta, complete the local residence registration (TIE / NIE / residence permit, varies by country). This unlocks your tax ID and bank access.

Two sides of the Malta DNV

An honest look at what works for nomads on this visa, and where the friction is.

  • 12-month tax exemption on authorised work income, then flat 10% on authorised work (one of the lowest EU rates after the exemption)
  • Maltese non-dom remittance basis: foreign income not remitted to Malta is not taxed at all
  • English is an official language and used across Maltese business, government, and daily life
  • 4-year total stay window is among the longest available (1 + 3 renewals)
  • Online application via Residency Malta with relatively fast turnaround (4–6 weeks typical)
  • Family reunification with spouse, registered partner, or documented unregistered partner
  • Malta permits dual citizenship
  • Schengen Area member with full free movement

Malta DNV: frequently asked questions

What is the Malta digital nomad visa?
It's a residence permit for remote workers, freelancers, and online professionals earning income from outside Malta. Initial validity is 12 months, renewable up to 48 months total.
What income do I need for the Malta DNV?
The minimum is €3.500/month from remote work. A partner adds €300/month; each additional dependent adds €300/month.
How long does the Malta DNV take to process?
Processing typically takes 4–10 weeks from submission. Plan another 4-6 weeks for apostille work and consulate appointments.
Does the Malta DNV lead to citizenship?
After 5 years of legal residence you typically become eligible to apply for citizenship. Check whether Malta requires renunciation of your prior citizenship — rules vary.
Which nationalities can apply?
The DNV is open to non-EU/EEA nationals with sufficient remote-work income from outside Malta. Your home-country tax treaty with Malta affects the practical economics more than visa eligibility itself.
Does the Malta DNV count toward Schengen 90/180?
No — time spent in Malta as a DNV resident does not count toward the Schengen 90-day tourist limit. You can still travel through other Schengen countries within the standard 90-in-180 rule for short visits.
