Life in Comino as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Maltese DNV route from Comino — a practical 2026 guide.

Why nomads choose Comino

Comino is one of the most photographed swimming spots in the Mediterranean and the smallest of Malta's three inhabited islands — except 'inhabited' is generous, since the permanent population is around 2 people. The whole 3.5 km² island is given over to nature: there's one small chapel, one (often closed) hotel, a few abandoned farm buildings, and an extraordinary length of dramatic limestone coastline. The famous Blue Lagoon is the magnet — a shallow cove between Comino and the smaller Cominotto islet where the water is so clear and turquoise it looks digitally enhanced. The downside: it gets overwhelmingly crowded in July and August with daily boat tours from Malta and Gozo (hundreds of boats, beach umbrellas pressed together, a few small kiosks); the upside: arrive on the first morning boat at 9am or stay until evening when the crowds vanish, and you get one of the great Mediterranean swims of your life. Beyond the Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon (slightly larger, deeper, much quieter) is a 10-minute walk away, and the panoramic Santa Marija Tower (built 1618 by the Knights of Malta against pirate raids) gives 360-degree views. Day trip only — there are no proper hotels or restaurants on the island, just basic snack stands.

Living in Comino as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Comino a good base for digital nomads?
Comino combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Malta DNV route that gives you up to 48 months of legal residence. The Maltese visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Comino?
Most Malta cities including Comino have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Malta DNV to live in Comino?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Malta DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Comino?
May to September (boat trips only run in calm summer weather) Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Maltese bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Comino on the DNV?
It depends on the Malta DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
