Estonia launched the Digital Nomad Visa in August 2020, becoming one of the very first European countries to offer a dedicated remote-work residence permit. It is targeted at location-independent workers earning at least €4,500/month gross and is the natural complement to Estonia's globally-known e-Residency programme.

The visa is issued for up to one year via an Estonian embassy or consulate and cannot be renewed in-country — holders who want to stay longer must convert to a different residence permit. Estonia's flat 20% income tax applies if the holder becomes a tax resident; e-Residency provides an alternative business-setup route without DNV status.

Estonia DNV: frequently asked questions

What is the Estonia digital nomad visa?
It's a residence permit for remote workers, freelancers, and online professionals earning income from outside Estonia. Initial validity is 12 months, renewable up to 12 months total.
What income do I need for the Estonia DNV?
The minimum is €4.500/month from remote work. A partner adds €900/month; each additional dependent adds €600/month.
How long does the Estonia DNV take to process?
Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks from submission. Plan another 4-6 weeks for apostille work and consulate appointments.
Does the Estonia DNV lead to citizenship?
After 8 years of legal residence you typically become eligible to apply for citizenship. Check whether Estonia requires renunciation of your prior citizenship — rules vary.
Which nationalities can apply?
The DNV is open to non-EU/EEA nationals with sufficient remote-work income from outside Estonia. Your home-country tax treaty with Estonia affects the practical economics more than visa eligibility itself.
Does the Estonia DNV count toward Schengen 90/180?
No — time spent in Estonia as a DNV resident does not count toward the Schengen 90-day tourist limit. You can still travel through other Schengen countries within the standard 90-in-180 rule for short visits.
