Why nomads choose Tallinn

Tallinn is one of the great surprises of European travel: a UNESCO-listed walled medieval Old Town as complete as Rothenburg, set on a Baltic harbour that has been a Hanseatic League trading post since the 13th century, all wired into a country that pioneered nationwide e-voting, x-road digital governance, and Skype. The Toompea Hill upper town holds the Russian-Orthodox onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the parliament building inside the medieval Toompea Castle, and three viewing platforms (Patkuli, Kohtuotsa, and Piiskopi) where every Tallinn postcard is shot. Below, the lower town is a tight grid of Gothic merchant houses around the Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats), with the Town Hall itself — the oldest in the Baltics, completed in 1404 — and Olde Hansa, the city's best-known medieval-themed restaurant. Modern Tallinn has serious teeth too: the Telliskivi Creative City and the regenerated Kalamaja district are excellent for design shops, vintage stores, street food at Balti Jaama Turg, and craft breweries. The Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour museum, inside a hangar with original concrete shell domes, is one of Europe's best maritime museums.

Living in Tallinn as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Tallinn a good base for digital nomads?
Tallinn combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Estonia DNV route that gives you up to 12 months of legal residence. The Estonian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Tallinn?
Most Estonia cities including Tallinn have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Estonia DNV to live in Tallinn?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Estonia DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Tallinn?
May to September Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Estonian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Tallinn on the DNV?
It depends on the Estonia DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
