How Greece permanent residency works

Greece grants long-term residence under EU Directive 2003/109/EC (transposed by Law 4251/2014) after 5 years of continuous legal residence. Time on the DNV counts in full toward this clock, making the Greek DNV a genuine on-ramp to settled status rather than a parallel track.

"Continuous" allows up to 6 consecutive months absent in one stretch, with total absences across the 5-year window capped at 10 months. Greece is reasonable about documentation: passport stamps, AFM activity records, and AMKA contributions are the principal evidence the migration office reviews.

There is no formal language test for long-term residence (the integration test that previously existed for some routes was eliminated for the standard EU LTR path). Demonstrating sufficient income, accommodation, clean tax compliance, and clean criminal records are the principal requirements.

Greek long-term residence is renewable every 5 years and converts the conditional DNV-style permit into close-to-citizen rights: free movement in the Greek labour market, full EOPYY healthcare, simpler family reunification, and the gateway to the additional 2 years of residence needed before citizenship eligibility opens.

The settlement path from a Greece DNV

The DNV pathway transitions cleanly to long-term residence. The initial 12-month visa converts to a 2-year residence permit on arrival, then renews for 3 years (totalling 5 years on the permit cycle). After 5 years of continuous legal residence, the holder qualifies for the EU long-term residence permit, which removes the income and remote-work conditions entirely.

Continuous residence allows reasonable absences: no single trip exceeding 6 consecutive months, and no more than 10 months total across the 5-year window. Greece checks documentation at the application stage but is generally less rigid than Italy on edge cases.

If circumstances change mid-DNV, Greek law permits lateral conversion to standard work permits, family permits (after marriage or partnership with a Greek or EU national), student permits, or investor permits with continuity of the residency clock. Direct conversion from DNV to self-employment permit is straightforward once a Greek-source income stream is established.

If the DNV expires without renewal or long-term residence application, the grace window is 30 days for residence-permit renewal applications. After that the clock resets. Practical advice: file renewals 60–90 days before expiry, and start the long-term residence application during the final renewal cycle rather than after.

Which European DNVs lead to permanent residency?

Greece DNV → PR: frequently asked questions

Does the Greece DNV lead to permanent residency?
Yes, if Greece's DNV counts toward the residence clock for permanent residency. Some European DNVs (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Romania) count; others (Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Malta, Latvia, Iceland, Slovenia) do not. Check the verdict callout at the top of this page for Greece specifically.
How many years before I can apply for Greece PR?
For DNVs that count, the standard EU minimum is 5 years of continuous legal residence under Directive 2003/109/EC. Greece's specific clock and conditions are described in the overview above.
Can I leave Greece during the PR clock?
Generally yes — EU Long-Term Resident permits permit up to 6 consecutive months absent without breaking continuity, and around 10 months total across the qualifying window. Greece-specific tolerances are detailed in the overview.
Do I need to speak Greece's language for PR?
Most countries require an A2 or B1 language test, plus a basic civics or constitutional knowledge assessment. Greece requires B1 for the citizenship stage; the PR stage is usually one level lower.
Can I work freely after Greece PR?
Yes — once you hold an EU Long-Term Resident permit, you have free access to the Greece labour market, plus most state benefits and public healthcare on equivalent terms to citizens.
What if the Greece DNV doesn't count toward PR?
Then you need to convert off the DNV to a qualifying permit (work, family reunification, investment, study). The path above lists the practical options. The residence clock starts fresh from the date of conversion.
