A taste of Limassol

Limassol is the most cosmopolitan and economically dynamic city in Cyprus — a coastal port stretching along 17 kilometres of palm-lined seafront promenade (the Molos), with a booming financial and shipping sector that has brought a noticeably international, often Russian-, Israeli-, and Lebanese-influenced edge to its restaurant and nightlife scene. The medieval Limassol Castle in the centre is, by local tradition, where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 during the Third Crusade; it now houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum. Around it, the restored old town — the Turkish quarter (Tourkomahalas), the Carob Mill complex, and the upmarket Saint Andrew Street — mixes craft workshops with rooftop bars. Just outside town, the impressive ancient ruins of Kourion sit on a clifftop above the sea: the 2nd-century Greco-Roman theatre still hosts summer performances. The Wine Villages of the Krasochoria up in the Troodos foothills are an easy day trip for tastings of Commandaria, said to be the oldest named wine in the world (dating back to King Richard's wedding feast).
