A taste of Finland

Finland is mostly trees and water — 188,000 lakes, three-quarters forest cover, and a sauna for every two and a half citizens. Helsinki is the design capital, with Marimekko, Iittala and Artek showrooms within walking distance of each other and a saltwater swimming complex floating in the harbor.

The pull moves north. Lapland trades summer's midnight sun for winter's aurora; reindeer herding remains a living Sámi tradition; and Rovaniemi sells itself as Santa's official address. South or north, end the day in a wood-fired sauna and a roll in the snow or lake.
