About Romania

Transylvania trades in the obvious clichés — Bran Castle, Vlad III, vampire tours — but the real attraction is the painted Saxon villages of Viscri and Biertan and the Bucegi range above Brașov. Sibiu and Sighișoara are walled medieval cores still inhabited at human pace.

The Bucovina monasteries paint their outside walls with biblical frescoes that survived five hundred Romanian winters. Bucharest doesn't try to be charming — it's a chaotic post-communist capital with grand boulevards, brutalist scars and a thumping food scene. Don't skip Maramureș for the wooden churches and the Merry Cemetery's hand-painted gravestones.
