Life in Split as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Croatian DNV route from Split — a practical 2026 guide.

The case for Split

Split is the closest thing in the world to a living Roman ruin: the city's entire historic core was built inside Emperor Diocletian's enormous waterfront palace, completed in AD 305 for his retirement. The original walls, the four monumental gates, the Peristyle square, the octagonal Mausoleum (now repurposed as the Cathedral of St Domnius, making it the oldest functioning cathedral in the world), and the underground cellars all survive — with around 3,000 people still living and working among them. The cellars (Game of Thrones fans will recognise them as Daenerys's dragon-keeping chambers) are now a small museum and craft market. Beyond the palace, the Riva promenade runs the length of the harbour, the Marjan forest park climbs the hill at the western end with paths, viewpoints, and small Romanesque chapels carved into the cliff, and the Mestrovic Gallery showcases the work of Croatia's most celebrated 20th-century sculptor in his own former villa. Split is also the natural gateway to the Dalmatian islands — ferries leave constantly for Hvar, Brač, Vis, and Korčula.

Living in Split as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Split a good base for digital nomads?
Split combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Croatia DNV route that gives you up to 18 months of legal residence. The Croatian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Split?
Most Croatia cities including Split have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Croatia DNV to live in Split?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Croatia DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Split?
May to September Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Croatian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Split on the DNV?
It depends on the Croatia DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
