Cyprus digital nomad visa for American

The complete 2026 guide for American planning to live and work remotely in Cyprus.

Cyprus introduced its Digital Nomad Visa in 2021 with an initial cap of 100 holders, later raised to 500. Approved applicants can live in Cyprus while working remotely for foreign employers or clients, with attractive Cyprus tax incentives — including a 50% income-tax exemption for high earners working in Cyprus for at least 17 years.

Cyprus is a Schengen candidate (not yet a full member) but is part of the EU. Note that the DNV grants Cyprus residence but does not unlock Schengen-wide free movement until Cyprus completes accession.

Why Americans choose the Cyprus digital nomad visa

  • Non-Dom status: 0% tax on dividends, interest, and capital gains on securities for up to 17 years
  • 60-day tax residency rule (one of the lowest physical-presence thresholds in the EU), liberalised in January 2026
  • 50% income tax exemption on employment income above €55,000 for up to 17 years (Article 8(23A))
  • Cyprus tax-free threshold raised to €22,000 in 2026 from the historical €19,500
  • EU member with English widely spoken across government, business, and professional services
  • Common-law legal system familiar to UK and Commonwealth nationals
  • Family included from day one
  • Dual citizenship permitted; one of the EU's most accessible citizenship clocks at 7 years

Applying for the Cyprus DNV from United States

Most digital nomad visas accept applications through two routes: at a consulate or embassy in the home country, or in some cases directly from inside the destination country during a visa-free tourist entry. Check the official government page for the most current information on accepted document formats, biometric appointment scheduling, and the latest income threshold.

Americans planning to apply for the Cyprus DNV should account for document apostille requirements: documents issued in United States typically need either a Hague apostille (when both countries are Convention members) or consular legalization. Plan for at least four to six weeks for document preparation in addition to the visa's stated processing time.

Key considerations for Americans

Tax residency triggers at 183 days. Most countries treat you as a tax resident after 183 days in any 12-month period, which can significantly change tax exposure. Holding the Cyprus DNV does not automatically make someone a tax resident, but extended stays typically do.

Home-country tax obligations may persist. Americans should verify whether United States taxes citizens on worldwide income regardless of residency, and how tax treaties between United States and Cyprus interact with their specific employment structure.

Schengen 90/180 rule does not apply to residents. Once the Cyprus residence card is issued, time spent in Cyprus does not count against the standard Schengen 90/180 tourist limit, leaving room for additional Schengen travel within the standard tourist rules.

How the Cyprus DNV interacts with Schengen 90/180

Time spent in Cyprus on the digital nomad visa does not count toward the Schengen 90-day limit. As a registered resident, the right to live there continuously is granted, while still being free to travel through other Schengen countries within the standard 90-in-180 rule for tourist visits.

For more on the Schengen 90/180 rule and how it interacts with residence permits, see the 90/180 rule guide and try the Schengen calculator.

EES and ETIAS impact for Americans

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is operational and biometrically records every entry and exit for non-EU travelers. ETIAS, the EU's pre-travel authorization, launches Q4 2026 with a €20 fee, valid for three years. As a Cyprus digital nomad visa holder, ETIAS is not required for travel to Cyprus itself once the residence card is issued, though it may still be needed for tourist travel to other Schengen countries during the brief gap before issuance.

For detailed guidance, see the ETIAS hub and EES guide.
