Life in Thingvellir as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Icelandic DNV route from Thingvellir — a practical 2026 guide.

The case for Thingvellir

Thingvellir (Þingvellir, 'the assembly plains') is the spiritual heart of Iceland and one of the most geologically extraordinary places on Earth. The park sits squarely in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge — the only place above water where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly drifting apart at about 2 cm a year, and you can walk between two literal continents through the dramatic Almannagjá gorge. It was here, on a natural rock platform called the Lögberg ('Law Rock'), that the chieftains of Iceland's Viking settler families gathered each summer for two weeks starting in AD 930 to make laws and resolve disputes — the world's first functioning parliament. The Alpingi met continuously at Thingvellir for 868 years until 1798, when the assembly moved to Reykjavík. Walk the Almannagjá trail with the cliffs of the North American plate towering on one side, visit the Lögberg and the small black wooden church (1859), and finish at the brilliantly clear glacial fissure Silfra — the underwater divide between the two continents, where divers and snorkellers swim in 2°C, 100-metre-visibility water. The Oxarárfoss waterfall framed by the gorge is one of Iceland's most photogenic.

Living in Thingvellir as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Thingvellir a good base for digital nomads?
Thingvellir combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Iceland DNV route that gives you up to 6 months of legal residence. The Icelandic visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Thingvellir?
Most Iceland cities including Thingvellir have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Iceland DNV to live in Thingvellir?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Iceland DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Thingvellir?
May to September (June 17 — Iceland's National Day — is celebrated here) Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Icelandic bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Thingvellir on the DNV?
It depends on the Iceland DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
