Life in Pisa as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Italian DNV route from Pisa — a practical 2026 guide.

Why base yourself in Pisa

Pisa is famous for one famous joke of architecture — but the city is far more rewarding than the single internet meme suggests. The Piazza dei Miracoli ('Field of Miracles') is one of the most photographed UNESCO sites in the world and genuinely sublime: a vast green field on which sit four masterpieces of medieval Italian architecture in their original Romanesque white marble brilliance. The Leaning Tower of Pisa itself (started 1173, finished 1372 after the tilt was discovered halfway through construction; now leaning a stabilised 4 degrees off vertical) is the bell tower of the Cathedral, and you can climb its 296 spiral steps for a panorama (book ahead, timed entry only). The Cathedral with its dazzling striped marble facade and Galileo's swinging lamp (which reputedly inspired his pendulum theory), the round Baptistery with its remarkable echo (the largest baptistery in Italy), and the Camposanto cemetery cloister with extraordinary frescoes by Buffalmacco — all are essential. Beyond the Piazza, the rest of Pisa is a pleasure: the Arno riverfront with the tiny Santa Maria della Spina chapel, the modern Tuttomondo mural by Keith Haring (his last public artwork), and the lively student bars around Borgo Stretto.

Living in Pisa as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Pisa a good base for digital nomads?
Pisa combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Italy DNV route that gives you up to 60 months of legal residence. The Italian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Pisa?
Most Italy cities including Pisa have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Italy DNV to live in Pisa?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Italy DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Pisa?
April to October Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Italian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Pisa on the DNV?
It depends on the Italy DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
