Life in Sigulda as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Latvian DNV route from Sigulda — a practical 2026 guide.

Why nomads choose Sigulda

Sigulda is Latvia's adventure-sports and castle-spotting capital — a hilly, forested town wedged into the steep sandstone valley of the Gauja river, with three different castles within walking distance of each other. The atmospheric red-brick ruins of Sigulda Medieval Castle (1207, the Brothers of the Sword stronghold) sit on one bluff; the 19th-century Sigulda New Castle (now the town hall) stands beside it; across the valley on the other side of the river, the bigger, more dramatic Turaīda Castle (started 1214, repeatedly rebuilt) commands a panoramic ridge above the trees, with the moving legend of the Rose of Turaīda — a beautiful young woman murdered in 1620 nearby, defending her honour — commemorated at the chapel and grave below. Connect the two sides on the dramatic cable car suspended high over the river gorge, the only such cable car in Latvia, or take the longer walk through the Gauja National Park (Latvia's largest, 91,786 hectares of sandstone cliffs, caves, and old-growth forest). Sigulda also has Latvia's only year-round bobsleigh-and-luge track (built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics; you can ride the practice 'wok' year-round and the real summer bobsleigh from May to October) and a working tarzanas adventure park.

Living in Sigulda as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Sigulda a good base for digital nomads?
Sigulda combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Latvia DNV route that gives you up to 24 months of legal residence. The Latvian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Sigulda?
Most Latvia cities including Sigulda have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Latvia DNV to live in Sigulda?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Latvia DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Sigulda?
May to October (June–August best for hiking, autumn for foliage) Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Latvian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Sigulda on the DNV?
It depends on the Latvia DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
