Life in Bran as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Romanian DNV route from Bran — a practical 2026 guide.

Why base yourself in Bran

Bran is the storybook Transylvanian village famous for one extraordinary building — Bran Castle, the dramatic 14th-century clifftop fortress that has been marketed since the 1970s as 'Dracula's Castle' (Bram Stoker's actual 1897 novel never names the castle directly, and the historical Vlad the Impaler probably only stayed here once, briefly, as a prisoner; but the silhouette is undeniably the most cinematically Dracula-esque in the Carpathians). The castle was originally built by the Saxons of Brasov in 1377 to defend the strategic Bran Pass between Transylvania and Wallachia, and was later given to Queen Marie of Romania (the British-born granddaughter of Queen Victoria) in 1920 as a royal summer residence. The wonderfully atmospheric interior — lit by narrow windows, with original royal furnishings, secret passageways, and a small permanent exhibition on the medieval Wallachian prince Vlad III Țepeș ('the Impaler') who likely inspired Stoker's vampire — makes for a great hour's wander. The wider village of Bran has the small medieval church, a tradition of family-run pensions for overnight stays, and access to brilliant Bucegi Mountains hiking. Combine with Râșnov Citadel (15km away, dramatically restored hilltop ruin) and the nearby ski resorts of Preăl and Poiana Braşov.

Living in Bran as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Bran a good base for digital nomads?
Bran combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Romania DNV route that gives you up to 24 months of legal residence. The Romanian visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Bran?
Most Romania cities including Bran have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Romania DNV to live in Bran?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Romania DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Bran?
May to October (the castle gets very crowded around Halloween) Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Romanian bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Bran on the DNV?
It depends on the Romania DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
