Entering Spain: what you need to know

As a Schengen member, Spain applies the common 90/180 rule: you can stay in Spain (and the rest of the Schengen Area) for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period without a long-stay visa. Days spent in any Schengen country, including transit, all count toward the same 90-day quota.

Spanish border control at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and other entry points will stamp your passport on arrival and departure (or capture biometrics under EES once fully rolled out). Keep proof of onward travel, accommodation and travel insurance on you in case asked.

Tips for Mauritians traveling to Schengen

Mauritian passport holders travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days per 180-day period). From late 2026, ETIAS authorization (€20, 3-year validity) is required online before travel.

Practical notes for Mauritians traveling to Schengen:

  • Direct flights from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (MRU) to Paris (Air France, Air Mauritius), Frankfurt and Vienna (seasonal). Most travelers connect via Paris CDG, Dubai or Mumbai. Daily Air Mauritius service to Paris is the workhorse route
  • Proof of funds at entry — €100/day. Mauritian rupee (MUR) credit cards from MCB, SBM and ABSA work in Europe but exchange rates can be poor; multi-currency cards (Wise, Revolut, MyT Money) offer better value
  • Travel insurance with €30,000 medical coverage is Schengen-mandated. Swan, Mauritian Eagle and MUA all offer compliant Schengen policies
  • France is the natural hub — shared language (French is official in Mauritius), large Mauritian diaspora in Paris and Marseille, and direct flight access
  • Indo-Mauritian and Sino-Mauritian heritage means many Mauritians qualify for Indian OCI or Hong Kong passports, opening alternative travel options

Top Schengen destinations are France, Italy, Germany and Belgium. Long-stay options include France's Passeport Talent, Belgian residence permits, and Italian study visas (Mauritian students at Italian universities are well-represented).

Passport rule: Mauritian passports must be valid at least 3 months beyond your intended Schengen departure. The biometric Mauritian ePassport is issued by the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis. Renewal typically 5–10 working days.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Spain

How long can Mauritians stay in Spain?

Up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, whether you travel visa-free or on a short-stay Schengen visa.

What is ETIAS, and will Mauritians need it?

ETIAS is a €20 online travel authorization for visa-free visitors to the Schengen Area, expected from Q4 2026. It is not a visa. Visa-required nationalities apply for a Schengen visa instead. Check the answer box above to see which applies to Mauritians.

How long does a Schengen visa take to process?

Most short-stay Schengen visa decisions take around 15-45 days. You can apply up to six months before travel, so apply early in peak season.

Can Mauritians stay longer than 90 days in Spain?

Not as a tourist. Beyond 90 days you need a national long-stay visa or residence permit. If you work remotely, Spain may offer a Digital Nomad Visa worth checking.
