Why visit Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary is Central Europe's most aristocratic spa town — a long, narrow ribbon of pastel-coloured Belle Époque hotels and colonnades wedged into a steep wooded valley along the Teplá river, with hot springs bubbling up at temperatures between 40 and 73°C from 79 separate sources beneath the streets. The town has been drawing royalty and writers since the 14th century: Goethe, Beethoven, Karl Marx, Peter the Great, and Casanova all 'took the waters' here, and the tradition of carrying a porcelain Becher cup with a built-in straw and sipping the mineral water as you stroll between the five main colonnades is still very much alive. The 12th hot spring — the Vridlo Geyser — fires a 12-metre column of 73°C water inside the modernist Vridlo Colonnade. Beyond the springs, ride the Diana Funicular up to a 35-metre observation tower for the panorama, sample the local Becherovka herbal liqueur at the Jan Becher Museum, and visit at the start of July for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — one of the oldest and most prestigious in Eastern Europe, attracting global stars and arthouse premieres.
