First impressions of Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel is the most photographed sight in France after the Eiffel Tower, and its single image — a Gothic abbey crowning a granite cone, ringed by ramparts, rising from a tidal plain that floods around it twice a day — is justifiably iconic. The island has been a Benedictine monastic site since 966; the spectacular abbey church on top, with its remarkable 'Marvel' (La Merveille) three-tier Gothic complex of refectories, cloister, and crypts built into the rock, is the headline visit. The single street climbing up to it (the Grande Rue) is tightly packed with tourist shops and the famous Mere Poulard restaurant (where the soufflé omelette has been beaten by a copper bowl since 1888), but escape onto the ramparts and the experience changes. The 2014 bridge replaced the old causeway, restoring tidal flow around the island; at the highest spring tides (consult the schedule), the rising sea genuinely surrounds the whole rock. Stay overnight in one of the small island hotels to see it after the day-trippers leave and at dawn, when it's transformative; or join a guided low-tide walk across the bay (only with a qualified guide — the quicksand is real).
