A taste of Lithuania

Vilnius's old town is the largest in Eastern Europe — a baroque maze of churches, courtyards and a self-declared bohemian republic called Užupis that issued its own constitution. Bookshops, jazz cellars, and a defiant artistic streak that survived occupation by Germans and Soviets and outlasted both.

The Curonian Spit is the otherworldly part: a long sandbar of pine forests and migrating dunes shared with Russia's Kaliningrad enclave. Kaunas — Lithuania's interwar capital — has a wave of modernist architecture worth a day. Eat cepelinai if you can stomach a meat-stuffed potato dumpling the size of a fist.
