A taste of Slovakia

The High Tatras pack the most Alps per square kilometer of anywhere in Europe — a small range, but jagged and steep, with mountain huts spaced a hard day's hike apart. Bratislava lies on the Danube within sight of Austria and Hungary; you can paddle into all three countries in a long afternoon.

The country runs on castles — Spiš, Bojnice, Orava — and on a folk-village belt where blue-painted timber houses still hold weddings and harvest festivals. Try the bryndzové halušky (sheep-cheese gnocchi with bacon) and the slivovica. Slovakia stays cheaper and quieter than its neighbors, and that's most of the appeal.
