About Slovenia

Slovenia squeezes Alps, Adriatic and Pannonian plains into a country the size of New Jersey. Lake Bled with its island church and clifftop castle is the cliché; the gorges of Vintgar, the karst caves of Postojna, and the Soča River's electric-blue rapids are the substance.

Ljubljana is a small green capital with a riverside designed by Plečnik, an open-air market on the Triple Bridge, and bars that spill onto the embankment all summer. The Karst region produces prosciutto and Teran wine; Piran is a Venetian outpost on a five-kilometer coast. Ski Vogel in winter, raft the Soča in summer.
