Life in Rhodes as a digital nomad

Living, working remotely, and the Greek DNV route from Rhodes — a practical 2026 guide.

The case for Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an extraordinary cocktail of medieval crusader fortress, ancient Greek colony, Ottoman quarter, and modern beach resort. The walled Old Town of Rhodes city is its set piece: built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th century after they conquered the island in 1309, it's the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, with 4km of intact walls, the dramatic Street of the Knights leading up the hill, and the imposing Palace of the Grand Master at its summit (rebuilt in the 1930s by the Italian fascist occupiers to be Mussolini's eastern Mediterranean summer residence; still spectacular inside). The 6th-century BC Acropolis at Lindos, perched on a 116-metre cliff on the east coast 50km south, is the other essential visit; below it, the white-cubic village of Lindos cascades down to a turquoise bay. Beach options run from the lively Tsambika and Faliraki to the quieter Prasonisi at the southern tip (a windsurfer favourite). Don't miss the moving Jewish Museum in the old Jewish quarter — a remembrance of the 1,673 Rhodian Jews deported to Auschwitz in 1944, only 151 of whom survived.

Living in Rhodes as a nomad: frequently asked questions

Is Rhodes a good base for digital nomads?
Rhodes combines reliable infrastructure, an established expat community, and a Greece DNV route that gives you up to 36 months of legal residence. The Greek visa lets you live here without the 90/180 Schengen tourist constraint.
What is the internet like in Rhodes?
Most Greece cities including Rhodes have widespread fibre, mobile 5G across the centre, and a growing coworking footprint. Plan to use a coworking pass or a flat with verified speeds rather than relying on cafés.
Do I need a Greece DNV to live in Rhodes?
If you're staying more than 90 days in any 180 (the Schengen rule), yes — either the Greece DNV or another long-stay residence permit. Short stays under 90 days are fine on visa-free travel or ETIAS from Q4 2026.
When's the best time to scout Rhodes?
May to October Use the trip to test workspaces, neighbourhoods, and the Greek bureaucracy before committing to a DNV move.
Can I bring my family to Rhodes on the DNV?
It depends on the Greece DNV's family rules. The family planning page covers who qualifies, the income top-ups per dependent, and the partner-recognition rules in detail.
