The DNV insurance requirement
Every European digital nomad visa requires applicants to demonstrate private health insurance coverage at the application stage. The Malta DNV's published minimum sits within the European norm of €30,000–€100,000 in comprehensive medical coverage. The policy must be valid for the full duration of the visa, with no significant exclusions.
What the consulate actually checks
- Minimum coverage amount: typically €30,000 for emergency medical, €100,000 for repatriation, with some countries (Spain, Portugal) demanding higher floors.
- Geographic scope: must cover Malta as the primary residence country.
- Pre-existing conditions clause: most consulates accept standard exclusions, but the policy must cover acute care without lifetime caps.
- Duration: the policy certificate must show validity through your intended DNV period (or be renewable monthly with proof of continued cover).
- Provider acceptance: SafetyWing, IMG Global, Cigna, GeoBlue, and major regional providers are all widely accepted.
Public healthcare access for Malta DNV holders
Public-system access varies significantly across European DNV countries:
- Spain DNV: SNS public system access after residence registration and social security registration. Some regions grant near-immediate access; others require 12-month wait.
- Portugal D8: SNS access from residence registration, though many expats supplement with private cover for English-speaking specialists.
- Italy DNV: SSN access via voluntary registration (around €2,000/year for non-EU residents).
- Greece DNV: ESY access via residence registration and EFKA enrolment.
- Croatia DNV: Mandatory HZZO registration after residence card issuance — free state cover from registration.
- Romania DNV: Generally requires continued private cover; CASS access conditional on income reporting.
- Estonia DNV: Mandatory state insurance (Haigekassa) once you register Estonian tax residency.
- Cyprus, Malta DNV: Private cover required throughout the permit; public access only via specific employment routes.
- Hungary, Iceland: No public access for DNV holders; private cover mandatory throughout.
