First impressions of Black Sea Coast
The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast is best thought of as three different trips along the same shoreline. The northern coast around Varna mixes city life with the long sandy belt of Golden Sands, the Disney-by-the-sea resort of Albena, and quieter spots like Kavarna and the windswept Cape Kaliakra, where Tatar history, dolphin-spotting, and dramatic red cliffs meet. The central coast around Burgas Bay is the busy heart: Sunny Beach (the country's biggest resort, all neon, all night), the UNESCO-listed ancient peninsula of Nessebar attached to it, the elegant fishing-village-turned-arts-town of Sozopol, and Pomorie with its salt pans and mud-rich therapeutic lake. South of Burgas the coast turns wilder — the protected Ropotamo River nature reserve, the surfer-friendly beaches of Sinemorets and Lozenets near the Turkish border, and the marshy bird sanctuaries of the Strandzha Nature Park. Water temperatures hit a swimmable 24–26°C in July–August, the cuisine leans heavily on grilled mackerel, fresh mussels, and Black Sea white wines from the Pomorie region, and the whole coast is well-connected by bus and shared minibus.
