Why visit Rila
Rila is less a town than a sacred landscape: a green, water-rich corner of the Rila Mountains where Bulgaria's spiritual and natural heart converge. The drive from Sofia (about 2 hours) winds up through pine forests to the magnificent Rila Monastery — a fortress-like complex of black-and-white striped arcades surrounding the Nativity of the Virgin Church, whose interior holds over 1,200 frescoes painted by Zahari Zograf and others between 1840 and 1848. The monastery has been the spiritual heart of Bulgaria since the 10th century, played a crucial role in preserving Bulgarian culture under five centuries of Ottoman rule, and still houses around 60 monks. Higher up the same massif, the seven glacial Rila Lakes — each at a different elevation between 2,100m and 2,535m — form one of Bulgaria's most spectacular hikes; a chairlift from the Pionerska base station gets you to the trailhead in about 25 minutes, and the loop of all seven takes around six hours. Musala Peak (2,925m), the highest summit in the Balkans, also rises from this range.
