About Geirangerfjord

Geirangerfjord is the postcard image of Norway — a 15km branch of the western Storfjord, lined with sheer 1,500-metre vertical cliffs, dramatic glacier-fed waterfalls (the Seven Sisters, the Suitor, and the Bridal Veil are the most photographed), and a handful of impossibly perched abandoned mountain farms whose former inhabitants had to send children to school with rope around their waists in case they fell off the cliff. The fjord is UNESCO-listed (since 2005) and the centrepiece of the western Norwegian fjords region. The small village of Geiranger at the inland end (population around 230) is the main jumping-off point: from here you can take the magical 1-hour Geiranger–Hellesylt scenic ferry through the entire fjord, kayak the calm dark water in summer, or drive up to the spectacular cliff-top viewpoints. Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen ('the Eagle Bend') give the classic postcard angles down onto the fjord and village; the higher Dalsnibba road climbs to 1,500m for the panorama. Don't miss the moving Norwegian Fjord Centre in Geiranger, the still-working farm at Skageflaa (a steep but rewarding 1.5-hour hike), and the dramatic Trollstigen ('Troll Path') hairpin road north of the fjord.
