A taste of Liechtenstein

Sixty-two square miles wedged between Switzerland and Austria, with a hereditary prince still living in the castle above Vaduz. You can hike across the country in a long day; the Fürstensteig ridge trail and the Liechtenstein Way thread you past pastures, wine terraces and a surprising number of medieval ruins.

Vaduz itself is small enough to cover in an afternoon — a pedestrian high street, the Kunstmuseum's contemporary collection, and a tasting room at the prince's own winery. Use it as a slow-day detour between Zurich and the Tirol, not a destination in itself. Bring hiking boots.
