Why visit Schaan
Schaan is the largest municipality in Liechtenstein by population — around 6,000 people, just north of the capital Vaduz — and the country's main commercial and industrial hub. It's also the railway centre: the only working passenger station in the entire principality is here, on the Buchs (Switzerland) to Feldkirch (Austria) line. Don't let the workaday reputation fool you, though; Schaan has a quietly impressive cluster of sights. The pre-historic settlement on the hill of Krueppel is one of the oldest known sites in central Europe, with finds going back to the Stone Age. The well-preserved Roman fort of Vinionia, on the road that linked the Roman provinces of Raetia and Italy, is partly visible just above the town. The Theater am Kirchplatz (TAK) is the country's most important cultural venue, hosting plays, dance, and chamber music; the DoMuS (Doppelhaus Museum Schaan) tells the story of local farming life in a beautifully preserved 17th-century farmhouse. Don't miss the bizarre and brilliant Holey-Wood pop-art outdoor sculpture trail through the woods above the village, or the panoramic hike up the Drei Schwestern (Three Sisters) mountain trail — one of the country's classic walks, finishing at the Swiss-Austrian border ridge above the Rhine.
