About Balzers

Balzers is the southernmost municipality of Liechtenstein — a quiet, prosperous village of around 4,700 residents on a flat plain at the foot of the Alps, with the eastern bank of the Rhine forming the Swiss border. The headline sight, visible from the entire valley, is Gutenberg Castle: a perfectly preserved medieval fortress dating to the 12th century, perched on a 70-metre rocky outcrop directly above the village. The site has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic age (a famous local Mars statue was found here, now in the Liechtenstein State Museum), and the castle itself was lovingly restored in the 1970s and is now open free to the public, with seasonal concerts in the courtyard and a small museum inside. The walk up to it takes about 10 minutes from the village centre. Balzers also has the lovely Romanesque Marienkapelle (St Mary's Chapel) and access to the southern end of the Liechtenstein Trail — the 75km path running the entire length of the country through forests, villages, and Alpine meadows. The wider Liechtenstein Lowlands here are some of the best birdwatching in the area, with significant migratory traffic in spring and autumn. Combine with neighbouring Triesen and Triesenberg for a perfectly rounded day in the south.
