First impressions of Triesenberg

Triesenberg is the Alpine heart of Liechtenstein — a steep, scattered village of traditional wooden farmhouses climbing the western slopes of the Drei Schwestern massif, 800 metres above the Rhine plain, with breathtaking views back over Vaduz and into Switzerland. The local population descended from Walser settlers who arrived from the Valais in southwest Switzerland in the 13th century, and they preserve a distinctive Walser-German dialect and a unique cluster of cultural traditions that the excellent little Walsermuseum next to the church explores in depth. The pretty white-and-onion-domed Catholic Church of St Joseph, dating from 1768 and rebuilt after a 1962 fire, is the visual anchor of the village from every direction. Above Triesenberg, the mountain road climbs through the dramatic Wegliantel saddle to Malbun — Liechtenstein's only ski resort, a small but charming valley with around 23km of pistes (great for families and beginners, intermediate skiers can be done with it in two days), open December to early April. In summer, Malbun is the gateway to the country's best hiking, including the Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern panoramic ridge trails.
